our kids rule!
sophie has always had a real soft spot for helping out people less fortunate than us. whenever we are out and happen to run across a panhandler i can always count on soph to pull a dollar bill out of her little purse. i’ve gotten her involved with donating to a micro loan org. called kiva, but, i wanted to do something that was more local as well. at the beach we are fortunate to have a very dedicated group of people who run a homeless shelter and soup kitchen( jdoc). they have 50 beds, and as you can image, they are at capacity. i stopped by and asked the director, kirk, if there is anything a group of kids could do to help out. he gave me the idea of making hygene kits for their guests. it’s really simple and most of it can be bought at the dollar store. i took that germ of an idea to their awesome teacher, douglas, and she took it from there and made it an educational as well as altruistic project. they got to write up a proposal to ask for donations, which barbara and the church kindly granted (thank you, thank you). they asked parents to donate old towels and wash cloths (thanks parents). and they got to put their math skills to a practical use with the budgeting of the funds in order to get enough of the items to make all 50 kits. the kits are so simple: toothpaste, tooth brush, deoderant, soap, shampoo, bandades, towel and wash cloth. i’m so proud of what all the kids did and thankful for everyone’s support and encouragement.
- Echard, this is an amazing, selfless act. Thank you for sharing- sometimes everyone needs a little help, and sometimes just a small gesture can mean the whole world to someone in need. Hebrews 13:1
- thanks lauren, i totally agree.
